What is Christmas all about?
So what is Christmas all about? We know it's not about Santa, Die Hard or Christmas RomCom movies, and we can sometimes reflect on how Christ came to save us from the consequences of our wrong-doings (aka - "sin"). Theologically, this means Christ came to atone for our sins, meaning He took away our sins and chose to take the punishment on our behalf. This is all true, but is this why Christ came to earth?
Yes, He came to atone for our sins. Colosians 1:13-14 says:
God has rescued us from the power of darkness and has brought us into the kingdom of his Son, whom he loves. His Son paid the price to free us, which means that our sins are forgiven.
But more than that, He came to end the rebellion of Man (see Daniel 9:21-24) and to bring the reconciliation described in Colossians 1:21-22:
Once you were separated from God. The evil things you did showed your hostile attitude. But now Christ has brought you back to God by dying in his physical body. He did this so that you could come into God’s presence without sin, fault, or blame.
He wants a relationship with each of us, and through Jesus made a path for us to join His Royal family (See John 1:12-13). And He would have done it for just one of us; for you alone!!
Without atonement, there can be no relationship, but atonement is simply a means to an end: His ultimate goal is reconciliation and restoration for us!
The Enemy would have us think Christmas is about other things, but ultimately, it's about the relationship our God wants with each of us, and the only birthday gift we can give Him is our renewed resolve to seek intimacy with Him.
He is not waiting to condemn us. Rather, He is knocking on the door to open a relationship with us. What does that look like? How does someone have a relationship with God?
Relationships are not built upon grand gestures. Rather they are built by time spent together on an on-going basis. He is looking for your response 24x7x365, a loving Father waiting for His child to return home. As little as 5 minutes of prayer on a daily basis starts to build that relationship. Reading the Bible daily is another practical way to hear from Him daily. He knows everything about you; how are you going to get to know Him better? How much time is left before this window of opportunity is no more?
